I also think you need to regularly run coolant through the core to prolong its life, so I wouldn't close it off for months at a time. No downside to it that I can tell and it does keep the hot water from circulating through the heater core and out of the cabin.

5 years ago I installed ball valves on both supply and return lines for reason of keeping interior cooler in the sumer and also to have a way to isolate the heater core should a failure occur when on a road trip.
The valve forces all the coolant to go through the radiator, getting cooled, instead of maybe 10% going straight back into the engine, uncooled.

If you just shut off the flow to the heater core with #1 you also cutoff all coolant from from the block and cause a pressure issue with the WP trying to circulate coolant.

The little curved hose that goes from the water pump to the thingy on the T stat housing is the bypass. Either something will blow, hose, radiator or the block will overheat.
