The pistons on the Xtype calipers are turned in the same direction as the wheel rotates when the car is moving forwards so its anticlockwise for the passenger side. It was the rubber over the piston that was causing it to be like solid. I have a tool to rotate it but not simultaneously apply pressure. 3-4 pumps per wheel . Wow did this today to install my slotted rotors and for some reason the passenger rear would not go in!!! It will turn in very easily with a brake disc tool for the job. I finally got it but what a bitch.

If your car has the aluminium-bodied calipers then the books/workshop manuals say (I believe Haynes and ELSAWIN too) to wind the pistons in clockwise to replace pads etc? Also, note the orientation of the raised posts on the back side of the brake pad. Got the little universal 'cube' tool for turning pistons. I did mine last week using a piston tool. I found I had to push hard while turning to get it going. Please could you post the solution for AP fronts when you find it? If you look at the actuating lever it pulls toward the front of the car when you apply the hand brake.

Here's a cool tip before twisting the rear caliper. I borrowed a rear caliper screw in tool from AutoZone but, can't seem to get the piston to turn one way or another. You really have to push hard while turning. The piston is threaded inside and practically acts as a nut that screws into a threaded rod in the cylinder (a screw). If I turn the piston counter-clockwise it will extend but if I turn it clockwise it just turns in place and doesn't retract. If your using a wind back tool it should lock if you going the wrong direction !! If you buy a disc brake tool kit, very cheap on Amazon, it's very easy to turn the piston back with the right tool. Once the rubber was freed from top of piston, it went much easier but still not a easy as the N/S did. The C-clamp can damage your rear calipers because the pistons aren't meant to be pushed straight in like the front calipers. Thank you all for the quick responses.

The piston should go in with hand forced pressure while turning clockwise. You can adjust the amount of slack that your parking brake cable gets and it'll make it easier to re-install your parking brake. You have me thinking now lost it but when I changed my rear pads a few weeks ago I am sure I turned the piston on the nearside anticlockwise and clockwise on the offside. You are using an out of date browser. It gives pretty good coverage including removal, refitting, torque settings, using a windback tool, calliper cleaning and overhaul, etc.

The trick to these is to use needle nose pliers. Otherwise it just sits there and spins where it is.
The Left hand piston retracts in the counter clockwise direction, The Right hand piston in the clockwise direction. iownme, yes, you can pull the rear calipers off and wind the pistons in a little more. Privacy Statement -

Try this though. I opened the cap to the reservoir where you add brake fluid in the engine compartment on the driver's side. Isn't this correct?.
